The XR200 started production in the 1970s and continued until 2002. The XR200 is physically smaller and lighter than the XR250. Throughout production all XR200s had drum front and rear brakes, minimal electrical system which usually only consisted of a headlight and rarely a brake light and indicators for road use, no electric start and an air cooled single cam, single cylinder engine.
During 1984 and 1985 the engine head was revised to a RFVC four-valve unit that utilized twin carburettors. The heads were reverted back to the previous model two-valve head after 1985. Most XR200s had a five-speed gearbox although a six-speed gearbox was fitted on some years.
Early models of the XR200 had twin rear shocks up until 1980. 1981 saw the introduction the Pro-Link rear suspension setup which was far superior to the twin shock setup.
